Five provinces to see minimum wage increase April 1
The minimum wage is set to increase in five Canadian provinces and territories effective April 1, 2026. Workers in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, and Yukon, as well as workers in federally regulated sectors, will be the beneficiaries of the minimum wage increases. Ontario, British Columbia, and Quebec will see increases to their minimum wage later in the year.
Nova Scotia will institute an inflation-plus-one-percent formula, bringing the minimum wage from $16.50 to $16.75 per hour, with a second increase to $17.00 per hour expected on October 1, 2026.
BlackRock to address skilled trades shortage with $100M initiative
BlackRock has announced $100 million in support for a Future Builders Initiative to train 50,000 skilled trades workers over a five-year period to better meet the demands of U.S. infrastructure projects. The project, which is funded by The BlackRock Foundation, aligns with industry trends as it seeks to tackle the skilled labour gap in critical skilled trades like electricians, plumbers, ironworkers, and HVAC technicians by providing access to training, licensure support, and financial education to strengthen the sector long-term.
“As the U.S. faces historic infrastructure demands, capital alone is not enough—people are central to building our nation’s future,” said Larry Fink, Chairman and CEO of BlackRock.
The race to space 2.0
Those who have lived through the Cold War (a war that was cold on the western front but remained active through proxy wars in the east) are acutely aware that unfolding geopolitical events are reminiscent of an earlier time, where space was the next frontier. Canada is among the countries investing heavily in the launch of hundreds of new satellites that will support communication and are what Prime Minister Mark Carney referred to as “fundamental” to the country’s sovereign defence capabilities and autonomy.
Canada intends on competing with companies like Starlink when it comes to a made-in-Canada low earth orbit (LEO) satellite network that will launch by next year to expand internet services across the nation, supporting improved access for Canadians as well as military operations and natural disaster response.
